Quantum Meruit

« Back to Glossary Index

Quantum meruit is a legal concept that refers to the principle of “reasonable value” or “as much as he deserves.” It is a Latin term that translates to “as much as he has earned” or “in proportion to the work done.” Quantum meruit allows a person or entity to recover a reasonable amount for goods or services rendered, even in the absence of a formal contract or agreement specifying payment terms.

In legal terms, quantum meruit arises when there is an implied contract or when the original contract is unenforceable or silent regarding compensation. It is often invoked when there is an expectation of payment for services provided but no express agreement on the amount or method of payment.
