Appellant

« Back to Glossary Index

An appellant refers to a person or party who files an appeal with a higher court to challenge a decision made by a lower court. The concept of an appellant is primarily associated with the legal system, particularly in common law jurisdictions.

When a case is initially heard in a trial court or a lower court, a judgment or decision is rendered based on the evidence and arguments presented. If one of the parties involved in the case disagrees with the decision and believes that errors were made in the application of the law or the interpretation of facts, they have the option to appeal the decision.
