An affidavit is a written statement or declaration made under oath, which is used as evidence in legal proceedings. It is a formal document that presents factual information or provides testimony about specific facts, events, or circumstances within the knowledge of the person making the affidavit, known as the affiant.

The purpose of an affidavit is to establish the truthfulness and reliability of the information contained within it. Affidavits are commonly used in various legal situations, such as court proceedings, trials, administrative hearings, and even in some non-legal matters.
